The Machame Route, commonly known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic trails for climbers seeking to summit Mount Kilimanjaro. Renowned for its steeper terrain and breathtaking variety of landscapes, it attracts nearly half of all Kilimanjaro climbers each year.

This spectacular route takes trekkers through the lush Cloud Forest on the southern slopes of Kibo, across the expansive Shira Plateau, past the iconic Lava Tower, and over the famous Barranco Wall. The diverse scenery, combined with excellent acclimatization opportunities, makes the Machame Route one of the most rewarding ways to experience Kilimanjaro.

Despite being more physically demanding than some of the other routes, the Machame Route has one of the highest summit success rates due to its “climb high, sleep low” profile, which promotes effective acclimatization.
